Why Sirocco?

Sirocco is a processed powder designed specifically for the equine industry.  Developed and manufactured in Europe for the last 10 years, it is used in over 40 countries around the world for all types of horses in every discipline imaginable.

The main ingredients in Sirocco are clays, seaweed, minerals and dry oils.  It is the manufacturing process itself that makes Sirocco so different from other products. This patented process brings the clays and seaweed together to create a unique absorbing/dispersing action for handling moisture and the noxious gases that produce odors frequently found in stalls and trailers.  Two of these noxious gases (odors) can be identified as ammonia and hydrogen sulfide.  These gases create short and long term health risks for both the horse and the handlers.

Absorption is only half of the equation for handling moisture; Sirocco is also built to disperse the absorbed moisture into the air and return the powder to its original absorbing property.  This process of dispersing moisture is only found in Sirocco, making it highly desirable for use in all types of stables, stalls and trailers.  Sirocco will extend the useful life of bedding materials by two to three times.

Each of the dry oils that are used serves a specific function such as hardening the hoof and improving the health of the frog area.   Many farriers have commented on the positive affect Sirocco has on overall hoof health.  In addition, one of these oils creates the fresh clean smell, and serves as a natural fly repellent.

Sirocco is not only designed to be highly absorbent but also kind and gentle to the skin and hoof.  Pick up a bucket for your stable and stalls, or try the new “Trailer Fresh” to sprinkle in your trailer today!

Ammonia gas as pollutant in stalls

Environmental conditions significantly influence the health and performance of the horse.  Air pollutants, contaminants, insects, and external agents can endanger the precarious equine health equilibrium.  The most commonly known air pollutant in stables is ammonia gas, easily identified by it’s unpleasant, irritating odor.  Ammonia gas is produced in contaminated bedding from urea excreted in urine.  Ammonia gas is known to have a serious detrimental effect on the condition, health, and performance of horses.  Excess inhalation of ammonia gases can adversely affect respiratory functions and the biochemical conversion processes involved in the transport of oxygen and the qualitative formation of blood.  Continuous exposure of ammonia gas can induce predispositions to respiratory disorders such as pursiness.  Heat created by fermentation in bedding can cause hot feet syndrome and irritations.  The maintenance of horses in optimal conditions requires management of environmental conditions, and tight control over air pollutants.
